Now here’s an accessory that music lovers everywhere will enjoy. Baby Blanket Music offers a perfect way to share with little ones all the familiar songs of John Mayer, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Simon & Garfunkel. This is a new line of baby music that features top tunes from top music artists, but set to soothing lullaby arrangements.

Here’s a peek at what to expect…

Baby Blanket Music makes its debut with a collection of albums featuring unique, soothing lullaby arrangements of favorite songs from an array of well-known stars. Billy Joel, Elton John, John Mayer and Simon & Garfunkel are among the artists whose hit songs and
familiar melodies are featured in the collection.

Created by Josh Rutt, New York-based teacher, composer and performer, Baby Blanket Music was developed under the guidance of a wide range of doctors, teachers and child development specialists. As his closest friends began having children, Rutt carefully observed and participated in their babies’ development. He soon discovered that there was room for improvement in the
quality of baby music that was currently available on the market. As a result, Rutt set out to create a distinctive line of music designed to appeal to babies, parents and grandparents alike. As a student of music his whole life with a dynamic career focused on working with children, the development of Baby Blanket Music came naturally.

“I saw that there was a need and an opportunity for new ideas as well as new sounds,” said Josh Rutt, founder & CEO of Baby Blanket Music. “Much of the baby music I was finding was very stripped down, difficult for adults to enjoy, and did not seem particularly enriching for young ones. Since then, my goal has been to create music that is soothing and enhancing for babies
while remaining enjoyable for adults.”

Designed to soothe baby while enhancing the enjoyment and cognition of music, Baby Blanket Music features familiar baby sounds like vibraphones and music boxes paired with a full medley of richer, more classical instruments including strings, woodwinds, pianos, harps and soft percussion. Together, these instrumental arrangements create gentle textures that are calming and enjoyable to ears of any age.

Among the smash hits found on the albums are Billy Joel’s Piano Man and Uptown Girl; Elton John’s Tiny Dancer and Your Song; John Mayer’s Daughters and Why Georgia and Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water and Mrs. Robinson.

Baby Blanket Music is available as of March 2010 at specialty juvenile product retailers in the U.S., select online retailers including iTunes and at http://www.babyblanketmusic.com/> www.BabyBlanketMusic.com. Recommended retail for each of the four CD’s in the collection (Baby Billy Joel, Baby Elton John, Baby John Mayer and Baby Simon & Garfunkel) is $14.99. More albums from additional artists will follow with two new releases slated for Summer 2010.

Baby Wearing, Co-Sleeping and Attachment Parenting

It turns out attachment parenting isn’t scandalous at all, though some still consider it to be. In my opinion, it’s the healthiest form of parenting for a child and it’s how I am raising my second son, Daniel. But, I have still received criticism from friends and even some family members for my choice.

Consider the history of attachment parenting…

During World War Two when Americans were stationed in Okinawa, they discovered a very curious phenomenon. At the time, the people of Okinawa had no known incidence of mental health problems. Depression and anxiety disorders were unknown. This was a very happy culture, indeed. Americans took a closer look at how children were being raised, and they observed that babies were worn by mothers, and slept in mother’s beds, and were always with siblings or older family members. No one was ever alone and affection was liberally given to all children of all ages.

This observation coincided with a study by the WHO. In 1950, the World Health Organization sponsored a study called “Maternal Care and Mental Health”. This is the study which promoted the now-famous Harry Harlow to experiment with Rhesus monkeys in finding out the effects of maternal separation on infants.

The experiment went as follows:

“In Harlow’s classic experiment, two groups of baby rhesus monkeys were removed from their mothers. In the first group, a terrycloth mother provided no food, while a wire mother did, in the form of an attached baby bottle containing milk. In the second group, a terrycloth mother provided food; the wire mother did not. It was found that the young monkeys clung to the terrycloth mother whether or not it provided them with food, and that the young monkeys chose the wire surrogate only when it provided food. Whenever a frightening stimulus was brought into the cage, the monkeys ran to the cloth mother for protection and comfort, no matter which mother provided them with food.” (1)

The study continued:

“When the monkeys were placed in an unfamiliar room with their cloth surrogate, they clung to it until they felt secure enough to explore. Once they began to explore, they occasionally returned to the cloth mother for comfort. Monkeys placed in an unfamiliar room without their cloth mothers acted very differently. They froze in fear and cried, crouched down, or sucked their thumbs. Some even ran from object to object, apparently searching for the cloth mother, as they cried and screamed. Monkeys placed in this situation with their wire mothers exhibited the same behavior as the monkeys with no mother.” (1)

One of the most important findings of this study was that it contradicted the traditional advice of child-reading at the time, which was to limit physical contact with the mother. It was believed that too much physical contact between infant and mother would result in spoiled and needy children who would never find independence as autonomous beings.

It was also thought at the time that feeding was the most important factor in mother-child bonding, not physical affection. And this was also a time when formula companies were pressing mothers to formula feed and not even consider breast-feeding their infants. Breast feeding was considered vulgar by upwardly mobile society and formula was considered as the logical advance in feeding and it was also considered to be more nutritious than mother’s milk.

What Parents Need To Know About Sleep Apnea

sleeping child

Did you know that more than 10% of children suffer from snoring part or most of the night while sleeping? It’s true, and it may be an indicator of a far more serious problem–sleep apnea.

Symptoms that parents should be watchful for:
1. “Snoring that is loud enough to wake your child up” is the first indicator of sleep apnea, according to Dr. Dan Smith of the Focus Center for Sleep Apnea and Snoring. This is not the occasional snort or two but that incessant, honking-level snoring!
2. “If your child ceases breathing intermittently while sleeping.” When sleep apnea occurs, the tongue can be sucked against the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway and airflow stops or is greatly diminished.
3. “Suddenly waking up because he or she can not breathe and has shortness of breath or gasping.” This is directly linked to symptom #2, says Dr. Smith. When the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough due to the blockage, the sleeper partially awakens, the obstruction in the throat clears, and the flow of air starts again, usually with a loud gasp.
4. “If your child is excessively drowsy during the day.” This does not mean hitting the proverbial wall at 3 pm that a quick snack can fix or throwing a temper tantrum due to exhaustion. This means actually accidentally falling asleep during the day (not during nap time).

Sleep apnea is one of the most misdiagnosed medical problems–especially in children–and parents should know that loud and regular nightly snoring is often abnormal in otherwise healthy children. If a child suffers from this condition, he or she may be getting too little oxygen and too much carbon dioxide. This condition can lead to poor heart and lung development, behavioral problems, and even death if unchecked.

Thankfully, health centers have opened to help diagnose and treat sleep apnea. If you are concerned that your child may be suffering from sleep apnea, discuss your concerns with your child’s pediatrician to find out if further testing is needed.

Beauty.com has garnered quite a following for its fabulous collaborations with top fashion designers, and now for the first time, sister site drugstore.com is partnering with fashion designer and new mom, Jenni Kayne, who designed a chic, portable bag filled with eco-friendly products for mom and baby. The stylish Mommy Bag, available for a limited time exclusively at drugstore.com with a purchase of $75 or more, is a roomy canvas pouch that Jenni created as a compact yet practical alternative to a more traditional diaper bag.

Kayne, who welcomed her first child Tanner late last year, wanted to create something large enough to store products for a quick outing and small enough to stash tidily into a stroller or slouchy handbag. The washable, durable bag has elasticized pockets for bottles and snacks and offers a reliable way to keep baby travel basics separate and accessible. “When I was pregnant I was looking at diaper bags and thought there should be more options for busy new moms,” says Kayne. “Diaper bags can be so cumbersome and sometimes when you’re going out for a walk or need to run a quick errand with a baby, a giant bag doesn’t make anything easier.”

This functional, fashionable design by Jenni Kayne is one of many unique incentives for customers to save time and money by shopping on drugstore.com for their health, beauty and household products. Moms will receive the stylish Mommy Bag while taking advantage of the convenient bonus features on drugstore.com including automatic shipping and 5% back, helping them in managing a busy schedule and more time to enjoy with their children.

The Jenni Kayne Mommy Bag is valued at over $50 and comes filled with full and deluxe-sized samples for Mom and Baby, many from the drugstore.com Green and Natural store:

Just when you thought it was going to end, you get another snowstorm. Geez, does it ever end?

slippersSometimes, winter just seems to drag on and on, especially for us in the Northeast. We have 4 season – winter, mostly winter, partly winter, and almost winter again. If you don’t love snow and frostbitten toes, chances are you really hate this god-forsaken time of the year.

Fortunately, I found something that makes it a little less miserable. You can warm your heart and your aches and pains away with adorable Warm Whiskers!

On a cold night, just pop one of these Warm Whiskers in the microwave for a quick and toasty solution to work wonders on stiff necks, back spasms, poor circulation or arthritic pain. Only 90 seconds in the microwave will provide an hour of fragrant herbs and gentle warmth to bring you back to life. Melt away tension and pain while cuddling with their adorable critters.

Review: 37° Clothing For Toddlers and Babies

December 8th, 2008 by The Fashionable Housewife

Babies and Toddlers can be hard to buy for because usually parents already have everything they need and then some. Especially when it comes to clothes. So instead of going to Target and getting some ugly little Christmas onesies, get them something they’ll really appreciate like some awesome pajamas from 37°.

My daughter with our Christmas Tree

My daughter in her 37° Jumpsuit!!

37° are baby clothes, based on temperature regulation to help combat everyday fluctuations in ambient temperature and weather. These are the first and only product using smart textiles for the benefit of the child. This brilliant clothing line was created by mothers and designed to be both functional and stylish.

I don’t know what I would do without them. In regular onesies and pajamas, my daughter used to sweat all over, but her hands would still be cold. In the winter, we turn our heat down and night and she doesn’t like to be covered with a blanket, so I usually double layer her and have her wear socks to bed and everything. But she would sweat profusely and yet her cheeks and hands would be cold all night.

37° is a brilliant solution to a common problem. Now, my daughter only wears their onesies and pajamas to bed and there is no more sweating. She is toasty all night long, with no sweating and no cold hands. Her whole body is warm to the touch and she sleeps comfortably all night long.

If you have problems with your child sleeping restlessly or waking during the night, it could be because they are uncomfortable – either too hot or too cold. This is especially a problem with synthetic, footed, zip-up sleepers.

Not only is 37° baby clothes warm, they are uber soft and comfy too. The creative designs and adorable styles will have you wanting to buy more.

I have found, for me, the styles run a little big, so if your child usually wears sz 6-12 months, expect the pieces to be a little large on her, unless she’s chubby! My daughter is slim and very tall for the average 16 month old, so I have sz 6-9 months pajamas for her that fit beautifully!

The pajamas are approximately $30 USD. All the prices on the site are in Euros, so just Google the amount or use Yahoo Currency Converter to get an estimate on the prices.

I highly recommend 37° baby clothes, as I use it on my own daughter. It’s the safest clothing you can put on your baby for bedtime or any time. Help make your baby comfortable this winter with temperature regulating baby clothes from 37°.

Also, be sure to keep 37° baby clothes in mind as a great gift idea this Christmas. It would also make a wonderful baby shower gift as well. Any mom would appreciate receiving this as a gift, especially once they see the clothes in action. They’ll be happy because their kids will be happy!
