Baby Wearing, Co-Sleeping and Attachment Parenting

It turns out attachment parenting isn’t scandalous at all, though some still consider it to be. In my opinion, it’s the healthiest form of parenting for a child and it’s how I am raising my second son, Daniel. But, I have still received criticism from friends and even some family members for my choice.

Consider the history of attachment parenting…

During World War Two when Americans were stationed in Okinawa, they discovered a very curious phenomenon. At the time, the people of Okinawa had no known incidence of mental health problems. Depression and anxiety disorders were unknown. This was a very happy culture, indeed. Americans took a closer look at how children were being raised, and they observed that babies were worn by mothers, and slept in mother’s beds, and were always with siblings or older family members. No one was ever alone and affection was liberally given to all children of all ages.

This observation coincided with a study by the WHO. In 1950, the World Health Organization sponsored a study called “Maternal Care and Mental Health”. This is the study which promoted the now-famous Harry Harlow to experiment with Rhesus monkeys in finding out the effects of maternal separation on infants.

The experiment went as follows:

“In Harlow’s classic experiment, two groups of baby rhesus monkeys were removed from their mothers. In the first group, a terrycloth mother provided no food, while a wire mother did, in the form of an attached baby bottle containing milk. In the second group, a terrycloth mother provided food; the wire mother did not. It was found that the young monkeys clung to the terrycloth mother whether or not it provided them with food, and that the young monkeys chose the wire surrogate only when it provided food. Whenever a frightening stimulus was brought into the cage, the monkeys ran to the cloth mother for protection and comfort, no matter which mother provided them with food.” (1)

The study continued:

“When the monkeys were placed in an unfamiliar room with their cloth surrogate, they clung to it until they felt secure enough to explore. Once they began to explore, they occasionally returned to the cloth mother for comfort. Monkeys placed in an unfamiliar room without their cloth mothers acted very differently. They froze in fear and cried, crouched down, or sucked their thumbs. Some even ran from object to object, apparently searching for the cloth mother, as they cried and screamed. Monkeys placed in this situation with their wire mothers exhibited the same behavior as the monkeys with no mother.” (1)

One of the most important findings of this study was that it contradicted the traditional advice of child-reading at the time, which was to limit physical contact with the mother. It was believed that too much physical contact between infant and mother would result in spoiled and needy children who would never find independence as autonomous beings.

It was also thought at the time that feeding was the most important factor in mother-child bonding, not physical affection. And this was also a time when formula companies were pressing mothers to formula feed and not even consider breast-feeding their infants. Breast feeding was considered vulgar by upwardly mobile society and formula was considered as the logical advance in feeding and it was also considered to be more nutritious than mother’s milk.

The Ergo Baby Carrier

Posted on: September 14, 2009 @ 9:00 am     No Comments »

header

Each mother will have her own preference in baby wearing and the type of carrier she uses will differ from one mother to the next, but I think the Ergo Baby Carrier is worth mentioning. Parenting Magazine named the Ergo one of the 20 best products in the last 20 years. That’s a pretty impressive mention.

seal

7 Facts about the Ergo Baby Carrier:

1. It is ergonomically correct.
2. The Ergo comes with an optional infant insert that coordinates with the color of the carrier.
3. The Ergo is a front, back and side carrier.
4. It is for infants and toddlers.
5. Its straps are thickly padded.
6. The Ergo comes with a front pocket large enough for a single disposable diaper, eliminating the need to take a diaper bag on quick trips to town.
7. Like many companies are doing these days, Ergo offers coordinating products such as backpacks, infant inserts and accessories.

The Ergo comes in solid and print colors. The solid colors are less expensive costing $105 and the print is $110.

The Ergo has an Organic Version

For those of you environmentally conscious folks out there, the Ergo does have an organic version of this product. Their organic carriers are slightly higher priced: solids are $120 and prints are $135.

Carry Baby The Stylish Way!

Posted on: July 31, 2008 @ 2:13 pm     2 Comments »

The Belle Baby Carrier was meticulously designed by two fathers who engineer rock climbing safety equipment. These outdoor enthusiasts pay close attention to detail as well as product safety and functionality. So rest easy when you carry your baby in the Belle Baby Carriers. They are in good hands!

These baby carriers are perfect for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, hiking or walking. If you’re a stay at home mom, don’t let that deter you! These carriers are ultra stylish which makes them great for everyday use. I moved recently and I put my daughter in one of these carriers while I was packing and lifting boxes. I felt good knowing she was safely nestled against me.

Belle Baby Carriers come in lots of stylish prints and colors that are gender neutral, so both mom and dad can feel good wearing them. Plus the ventilated design is great for summer. Thinking about Fall coming soon? They’ve got you covered. The cheetah print one is furry and warm. (That’s the one we have!) Plus they just released two new prints just in time for Fall – Cherry Deco and Denim. Check them out below…

These baby carriers are ideal for babies 10-25 lbs and are super convenient because baby can face toward or away from you. For me, it was super comfortable to wear and simple to use. Some carriers, you have to pull out the directions and spend 20 minutes figuring out how to put it on, but not this one. It’s completely user friendly!

The other thing I really liked about it was being able to adjust it to the perfect height so I could discreetly nurse my daughter in stores. Being kind of a holistic mom, I am concerned about my daughter’s spine. I even bring her to the chiropractors with me. So I was really happy to see that this carrier actually fosters proper growth and development. Some carriers compact baby’s spine and it ends up being a problem for them later on.

Another cool thing is these carriers are actually made in Colorado of the highest quality fabrics and materials. I LOVE things that aren’t made in China! Nothing against China, it’s just it seems like everything is made over there…

I just have so many good things to say about this carrier, I could really go on forever. But enough of my opinion, it’s time you try one out for yourself and see how great they are!

Starting at just $89.95, you can pick between 11 different colors and prints. Check it out >>

So head on over and visit

THE BENEFITS OF BABYWEARING

Posted on: April 29, 2008 @ 12:03 pm     No Comments »

1. Sling babies cry less. Parents in my practice commonly report, “As long as I wear her, she’s content!” Parents of fussy babies who try babywearing relate that their babies seem to forget to fuss. This is more than just my own impression. In 1986, a team of pediatricians in Montreal reported on a study of ninety-nine mother-infant pairs. The first group of parents were provided with a baby carrier and assigned to carry their babies for at least three extra hours a day. They were encouraged to carry their infants throughout the day, regardless of the state of the infant, not just in response to crying or fussing. In the control, or noncarried group, parents were not given any specific instructions about carrying. After six weeks, the infants who received supplemental carrying cried and fussed 43 percent less than the noncarried group.

Anthropologists who travel throughout the world studying infant-care practices in other cultures agree that infants in babywearing cultures cry much less. In Western culture we measure a baby’s crying in hours, but in other cultures, crying is measured in minutes. We have been led to believe that it is “normal” for babies to cry a lot, but in other cultures this is not accepted as the norm. In these cultures, babies are normally “up” in arms and are put down only to sleep – next to the mother. When the parent must attend to her own needs, the baby is in someone else’s arms.

2. Sling babies learn more. If infants spend less time crying and fussing, what do they do with the free time? They learn! Sling babies spend more time in the state of quiet alertness . This is the behavioral state in which an infant is most content and best able to interact with his environment. It may be called the optimal state of learning for a baby. Researchers have also reported that carried babies show enhanced visual and auditory alertness.

The behavioral state of quiet alertness also gives parents a better opportunity to interact with their baby. Notice how mother and baby position their faces in order to achieve this optimal visually interactive plane. The human face, especially in this position, is a potent stimulator for interpersonal bonding. In the kangaroo carry, baby has a 180-degree view of her environment and is able to scan her world. She learns to choose, picking out what she wishes to look at and shutting out what she doesn’t. This ability to make choices enhances learning. A sling baby learns a lot in the arms of a busy caregiver.

3. Sling babies are more organized. It’s easier to understand babywearing when you think of a baby’s gestation as lasting eighteen months – nine months inside the womb and at least nine more months outside. The womb environment automatically regulates baby’s systems. Birth temporarily disrupts this organization. The more quickly, however, baby gets outside help with organizing these systems, the more easily he adapts to the puzzle of life outside the womb. By extending the womb experience, the babywearing mother (and father) provides an external regulating system that balances the irregular and disorganized tendencies of the baby.

Picture how these regulating systems work. Mother’s rhythmic walk, for example, (which baby has been feeling for nine months) reminds baby of the womb experience. This familiar rhythm, imprinted on baby’s mind in the womb, now reappears in the “outside womb” and calms baby. As baby places her ear against her mother’s chest, mother’s heartbeat, beautifully regular and familiar, reminds baby of the sounds of the womb. As another biological regulator, baby senses mother’s rhythmic breathing while worn tummy- to-tummy, chest-to-chest. Simply stated, regular parental rhythms have a balancing effect on the infant’s irregular rhythms. Babywearing “reminds” the baby of and continues the motion and balance he enjoyed in the womb.

SLING TIP:
The womb lasts eighteen months: Nine months inside mother, and nine months outside.
