We all know that some children struggle more than others in eating their vegetables. Yesterday celebrity Mom, Jennie Garth, was a part of an event called Veggie Central, which is a special event geared towards getting children to do what seems impossible to parents at times – To eat veggies. This celebrity mom has partnered with the makers of Hidden Valley® Salad Dressing and the Love Your Veggies campaign to share her love and secrets for getting kids to love their veggies. As a mom of three daughters, Jennie knows how hard it can be to get kids to the foods that are good for them.

Veggie Central was held at Grand Central Station in Manhattan. During the event, Jennie Garth interacted with school aged children as they dug their hands into dirt to plant seeds, demonstrated a recipe for them, as well as other activities planned for the day. These activities included many veggie-focused activities, including veggie trivia, ranch fountains, a veggie forest and plenty of fresh vegetables to snack on.

Each month Jennie Garth hosts webepisodes of the “Garden Party” on Hidden Valley’s website. I think this is such a great campaign and am sure many parents will appreciate these tips and ideas to help them get their children to eat more healthy!

Here is a link to a couple of clips from the Veggie Central event:

Silikids

Posted on: February 07, 2010 @ 8:00 am     1 Comment »

We have been hearing more and more about the importance of using BPA free products and products that are non-toxic to our children. Most of us are aware that going green is good for our families and the environment. But the cost in changing everything over to green, organic products is not just time consuming but expensive! Yet at the same time small steps over time makes moving in that direction much more affordable to many families. So without further adieu, I introduce another company that has joined the growing pool of businesses offering a green alternative in feeding accessories for kids and babies – Silikids.

Silikids products are BPA free, clean, hypo allergenic, non-toxic and has few pores, thus inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mold, unlike some sippy cups which can harbor both bacteria and mold. The Silikids website says that silicone is safe because “Silicone is basically made up of silicon, a natural element present in sand, quartz and rock, which, after oxygen, is the most abundant element on earth. Silicon is transformed into silicone when combined with oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. Because it is an inert material, it does not react with food or beverages, or produce any hazardous fumes. It’s non-toxic, hypo allergenic, does not promote bacteria or fungus growth, and it does not transmit taste to food.” Silikids products are green because silicone can be recycled and Silikids even suggests you sending your worn out products back to them, but claim that because silicone is very durable that won’t be for a long time.

Intrigued? Just want me to cut to the chase and get to the product line? Ok, they have everything from glass bottles and glass tumblers to knee pads and bibs.

Siliskins comes in a variety of colors for 8oz. and 4oz. bottles, for wideneck and standard in sizes large and small. This is a convenient solution to keep your old glass bottles safe.

Siliskin Glass comes in lime, purple, Retail $11.95

Silibibs come in red, lime, grey and tiffany blue. Retail $11.95

Silipads come in blue, green, orange and red. Retail $17.95

Silibottles come in aqua, pink, grey, white in 8oz. Retail 19.95

Silibottles come in purple, lime, white and aqua in 4oz. Retail $16.95

Please visit Silikids’ Retailer page to find a retail store near you or to find an online shop where Silikids products are sold. Here are a couple of sites that I used to pull photos and prices from:

BornFree – BPA-Free Baby Products

Posted on: December 10, 2009 @ 12:00 pm     3 Comments »

As Dr. Greene mentioned in my earlier article, BornFree is the first company to come out with a full line of baby products that are BPA-Free. Due to Dr. Greene’s interest and history in speaking about BPA, BornFree approached him to talk about their products, which he continues to do as opportunities arise. I was sent free samples of Born Free’s baby products to try and I write this review without payment from BornFree. I consider it a privilege when companies are willing to send samples so that I can provide readers with tried and true reviews. Born Free Logo

BornFree specializes in developing products that are 100% free of Bisphenol-A, Phthalates, PVC and Aluminum. The BornFree product line currently includes baby bottles (5 oz and 9 oz sizes), cups and accessories such as: replacement nipples, valves, collars, bottle caps, seal disks, cup spouts, handles, travel caps, silicone sleeves, a formula dispenser, as well as twister brushes to clean cups and bottles and pacifiers and teethers. BornFree even has a breast pump adapter that fits most breast pumps, so nursing moms, we weren’t left out! (Ha Ha!) BornFree also offers eco-friendly baby bottles and a water bottles for the rest of the family. Breast Pump Adapter

I am a full-fledged breastfeeding mom and have only used bottles on rare occasions. So my son has never even used a baby bottle, but when we tested one of the baby bottles, our son did not have any trouble with the flow of liquid that came out. Each of the bottles has seven parts: the bottle, the silicone vent, white plastic vent cover, sealing disk, nipple, collar and travel cap. In our use, the bottle was leak free around the cover and collar as long as the bottle was assembled correctly. When we first put it together, it leaked but that was because we put it together wrong. BornFree offers bottle nipples in 5 different flow rates, so there is a wide variety to meet the growing needs of your baby from 0-18 months. (BornFree’s product recommendation)Picture.aspx

I like the valve design on these products better than valves we have used in other products, not just because of the BPA-free factor, but they seal well and are not actually attached to the nipple of the bottle or cover of the training/sippy cup.

We love the training cup, even though it is not spill-proof. We did discover that the sealing disks that came with the baby bottles may also be used on the sippy cup to prevent spills, both when our son was not drinking and for traveling. Otherwise this cup does leak out the mouth spout, even with the travel cap on. If the cup is tipped, liquid will leak into the cap, creating a mess when the cap is lifted. However, the collar seal – when tightly twisted – does not leak. As I stated for the bottles, when we first put the valve system and collar together, it leaked and we did the same thing with the sippy cup, but when everything is assembled correctly, there are no leaks around the collar. Training Cup

It’s great that there is now a BPA-free product line that specializes in providing an alternative to the other products on the market, thus, making it safer to feed babies artificially; but remember, if you can, breastfeeding is always best. As with any products of this nature, they do seem to cost more, but in the long run do we value money saved or our child’s health?

BornFree products may be purchased directly from the BornFree website. We just received our new catalog from VitaCost and noticed that they are now selling BornFree products too. You may also check this link to locate a store near you.

My Chat with Dr. Alan Greene About BPA

Posted on: December 10, 2009 @ 8:00 am     2 Comments »

This week I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Alan Greene, a practicing pediatrician, author of Feeding Baby Green and Raising Baby Green and founder of DrGreene.com. We talked about the concern over BPA found in plastics, particularly baby products. While we here at The Fashionable Bambino are strong breastfeeding advocates, we realize that there are many mothers who choose not to breastfeed or simply cannot. Therefore, the products that Dr. Greene and I discussed will be of great interest to those of you just learning about the dangers of BPA or in search of BPA-free products for your baby. drgreene_boy

I first asked Dr. Green to give a definition of BPA in laymen terms and this is what he said,

BPA is the ingredient added to plastics to make it hard and clear. It does a great job at that. Originally, it was developed as one of the first estrogens in the 1930s and people have forgotten about it. It is more efficient in plastics than in medicine. In the early 90’s one of my colleagues found estrogen in yeast, and then found out that it wasn’t in the yeast, it was in the plastic flask and petri dishes. That’s what started the concern.

Low levels of BPA have consistently caused problems in animals. There have been about 200 studies done on animals and about 93% of them show that BPA cause early puberty, increase in breast and prostate cancer, obesity, and attention problems. There have also been findings that men working in factories producing BPA have higher impotence than men not working in BPA factories. The higher levels of BPA, the higher incidence of impotence.

So how do we avoid purchasing products with BPA if BPA is found in plastic products all across the board? We can do so by looking at the recycling number. The good numbers are: 1, 2, 4, and 5; if we see those numbers, we can relax, as it is safe to assume there is no BPA in products with these numbers. Plastic that has the number 7 often has BPA, but not always, so we want the product or container to say BPA-free. If it doesn’t have a number, we want it to at least say BPA-free.
Another place of concern is in canned fruit and soups. Canned green beans have contained the highest levels of BPA. Therefore, purchase frozen veggies or fresh and if you are going to purchase prepared soups, buy them in a carton, as cartons of soup that were tested contained no BPA.

In my own research, one article mentioned this:

The NIH’s National Toxicology Program advised ‘concerned parents’ to reduce their use of canned foods; use BPA-free baby bottles; and opt for glass, porcelain, or stainless-steel containers, particularly for hot foods and liquids.

One of the ways that Dr. Greene raises awareness among his patients and those that he speaks to is to educate them about BPA during pregnancy and during the first three years of the child’s life. He says that by making them aware during this time, they will most likely make the switch to BPA-free products. Dr. Greene acknowledges that there are so many scares out there about one thing or another that it is difficult to know what is a priority and what’s not. As a pediatrician, Dr. Greene believes this is a priority and it is an easy change to implement.

For more information on this, please read December’s issue of Consumer Reports, as they have done a report on this very topic. Thanks for the tip, Dr. Greene!

stickerDr. Greene recommends the use of BornFree products, which is the first company to come out with a whole line of BPA-free baby products, which includes baby bottles, training cups, pacifiers, nipples, and a formula dispenser. Even though Dr. Greene is promoting BornFree, he acknowledges that breastfeeding is the best, cleanest and greenest way to nourish your baby.

Dr. Green closed our interview by mentioning a small animal study conducted where the animals were given BPA while pregnant, but they also gave folate to them and it nearly eliminated the BPA found in them. Dr. Greene likes to see more studies done, but mentioned this study to emphasize his closing statement:

We want to minimize exposure to toxins where we can, and also maximize great nutrition because it protects us from many things.

Dr. Alan Greene Bio:
Dr. Greene is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of California at San Francisco. Upon completion of his pediatric residency program at Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Northern California he served as Chief Resident. He entered primary care pediatrics in January 1993. He is now a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, an Attending Pediatrician at Packard Children’s Hospital, and a Senior Fellow at the University California
San Francisco Center for the Health Professions.

Dr. Greene is the Past President of The Organic Center and on the Advisory Board of Healthy Child Healthy World. He is a founding partner of the Collaborative on Health and the Environment. He also consults for the Environmental Working Group.

Stay tuned for a review I will be posting this afternoon about BornFree products.

A Review of Tinytongs

Posted on: November 19, 2009 @ 8:00 am     No Comments »

allabouttinytongs

As I mentioned on Monday for our current giveaway, Tinytongs are the unique child-sized eating utensils created to make mealtime less stressful, less messy and more successful. The Tinytongs collection includes four stylish, ergonomically-shaped child-sized tongs in four fashionable colors. Tinytongs are made from polypropylene with TPE over-molding and are non-toxic, lead-, BPA- and phtalate-free. Tinytongs has passed all voluntary testing as specified in Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act 2008 (CPSIA)(H.R. 4040).

photoshoot4

I have to admit this product got my attention. I loved that the company is conscious of BPA and phtalate issues and is providing an alternative for concerned parents. I also thought it would provide a solution to mealtime messes. However, Tinytongs was not very popular in our home. Yes, the children were intrigued and certainly tried them, but my 21-month-old and 3.5 year old had a hard time figuring them out. On the other hand, my six-year-old, whose dexterity has amazed us since he was 2 and 3 years old, had no problems at all. The thing is that he isn’t the one that usually has a mess at his place around our meal table.

photoshoot12

Therefore, based on our personal testing, I believe that the success of Tinytongs greatly depends upon a child’s hand-eye coordination, dexterity, practice and much patience on the part of the child and parent. It is a new tool that requires a squeezing motion to be learned since most children already feeding themselves are used to digging in with a fork or spoon with a scooping motion.

Check out our great giveaway and www.tinytongs.com for more information on this new product.

Safe Sippy Cups: Toddler Drinking Cups I Recommend

Posted on: August 03, 2009 @ 9:01 am     1 Comment »

The Fashionable Bambino just turned 2 years old on July 27th! She’s getting to be such a big girl, but we still like to use sippy cups. Not only are they easier for her to use, but there are less spills for me to clean up!

I don’t use just any sippy cups in my house though. I threw out all my cheap plastic ones a long time ago and replaced them all with safe sippy cups that are BPA free or stainless steel. I’ve used so many in the past year or so, that I’ve really been able to narrow down my favorites and have listed them below for your convenience.

BabyGap Home: Kid Basix Safe Sippy2™ - Pink

Kid Basix Safe Sippy 2 Cup breaks away from the all-plastic sippy cup designs of the past. From the clean, non-leaching stainless steel cup to the unique safety features to the plastics free of Bisphenol A and other harmful chemicals, The Safe Sippy™ cup was created to accomplish one simple goal: Clean In, Clean Out.

The Safe Sippy™ 2 stainless steel drink cup was created in response to the growing body of emerging scientific evidence about the dangers of toxic chemicals used to make many plastics. Stainless steel was chosen because it is clean, stable and durable. Because stainless steel is stable and inert, it does not interact with the foods and fluids it comes into contact with.

This is like the Rolls Royce of all sippy cups. With 2 different spouts, this cup will grow with your child from about 1 year old to 7 or 8 years old. It’s easy to clean, easy to use and put back together, and surprisingly affordable.

Price: $10.99 – $14.95

Where: JustKidsStore.com and Gap.com

foogo

Foogo products are the ultimate in safety, designed with completely BPA-free materials and insulated to ensure freshness. Freshness and safety go hand in hand. If not kept at the right temperature, foods and beverages can spoil, causing potentially dangerous bacteria to form. If you are like every other parent, you are tired of your child’s beverage getting warm and then being wasted. Now Foogo, by Thermos, has your answer.

The Foogo by Thermos Leak-Proof Sippy Cup has double wall vacuum insulation for maximum cold temperature retention. It keeps your child’s drink cold for up to 6 hours! I can’t tell you how many times we’ve misplaced a sippy cup right after filling it up with milk, only to find it 6 hours later curdled and nasty.

I also like that this one has a spill-proof valve that prevents messes and the soft spout is easy and comfortable to sip from. It comes clean in a breeze with the dishwasher, but it’s not as easy to wash by hand. I recommend having an old toothbrush handy to scrub the nozzle with.

The other nice thing about this one is the kid-proof design. It has an unbreakable stainless steel interior and exterior that withstands daily wear and tear. Just be sure to duck if your kid after throws this one at you… it’s pretty heavy, especially if you drop it on your toe or something!!

Price: $10.00 – $14.99

Where: Wal Mart, Target, Babies R Us, and online at Amazon.com

cup

If you’re looking for something cheap and uncomplicated, I recommend the Nuby BPA-Free 14 oz Easy Grip No Spill Cups

The Nûby Easy Grip Cup feature the No-Spill easy to use, easy to clean soft silicone spout that prevents spills and reduces leaks. The unique 1 piece valve promotes natural healthy drinking because it needs very little suction, allowing your childs palate and teeth to grow naturally. The easy grip shape is perfect for little hands to hold and toddlers on the go.

This is definitely the easiest cup to clean if you don’t have a dishwasher. They are also very inexpensive so you can afford to have a dozen of them. I always try to have 1 with water and 1 with either milk or juice available for my toddler at all times. They are lightweight and replacement spouts are easy to come by.

Where: Babies R Us, DiapersEtc.com and Amazon.com
