Here is an innovative blanket that appears to meet a need that most moms have faced at one point or another. This blanket provides a way to nurse and keep baby warm, covered and protected from rain or shine. Heather Correa is the creator of this protective blanket that is “modern and water resistant”. She created the blanket, which is made out of Woobee polar fleece, because she had a need as a young mother and could not find what she was looking for. Right at her own kitchen table with the help of friends the first blanket was sewn.

There are five different features to this blanket: you may attach it over yourself, over your baby carrier, over your stroller, over your baby’s carseat – because it has ties to attach it to these different baby accessories, and finally, the blanket may be used on the floor for tummy or play time like a regular blanket. How versatile is that? It also comes in three different fabric prints – Rings, Squares, and Sunburst, as you will see below.

The blanket is rather pricey, coming in at $39.00 ($36.00 plus $3.00 for s/h), but imagine having a blanket that doesn’t fall off every time you or your baby moves? I don’t know, but I think it might be worth the expense, especially with the wind and weather backing that one side of the blanket is made from. It would also make a neat baby shower gift.

Kate Robertson, owner of Mayu Hand-Knit Alpaca, created Mayu after serving as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in Peru for over two years. She fell in love with the Peruvian ladies and their incredible knitting skills. These artisans learned to knit at very young ages and Ms. Robertson desired to help them establish a business doing what they do best – knitting. Therefore, as Ms. Robertson was finishing her time with the Peace Corps, she came up with the idea of starting Mayu in an effort to continue to support and assist her Peruvian friends. The mission of Mayu is to provide fair wages and to generate income for her beloved artisans. The income generated through Mayu helps provide better education for the women’s children. Also, one lady was able to have dental work done and others have traveled outside of their village.

As you see, Mayu has some very high quality items. The shawls could double up as a nursing cover for discreet breastfeeding. The Peruvian women take about 16 hours to knit a capelet and 24-32 hours to knit the long hoodie. Then they hand wash, dry and hand sew tags on. There is additional time invested to travel 2.5 hours to the city to mail the products to Mayu. The Milk Mumu was definitely the best nursing cover I have had the opportunity to use and review. They are similar to the Bebe au Lait nursing covers, but better.

The strap that goes around your neck is thinner and more flexible, which I found was more comfortable. The rigid neckline on the Milk Mumu is similar to the one on the Bebe au Lait cover, but less stiff and easier to manage. The Milk Mumu was also slightly smaller in width and length, which made it much easier to maneuver into the correct position. I also liked the terry cloth pocket in the corner better than the one on the Bebe au Lait nursing cover.

Overall, the Milk Mumu has become my favorite nursing cover and it now resides in my diaper bag at all times. I definitely recommend the Milk Mumu to any nursing mother that wants to cover up and stay fashionable.
