Hearts and Crafts for Valentine’s Day – Plantable Cards

Posted on: February 02, 2010 @ 8:00 am     1 Comment »

I thought these were a neat alternative to the normal Valentine’s Day cards we usually give out. They are an environmentally friendly Valentine’s Day card, plus they are plantable! These cards do not use up any of our forests as they are made from recycled cotton and contain seeds so that they may be planted, in lieu of throwing them away or putting them in your recycling bin. I think they’d make great little gifts for children and gardeners alike.

Designed especially for Valentine’s Day, the Plantable Valentine’s Day mini card provides your loved ones with a blooming memento and just as your love grows so will wildflowers. What a beautiful way to say I love you! Consider ordering a mailing envelope with your Plantable Valentines Day Mini Card. Envelopes measure 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches and take regular postage. $1.25/card, plus $0.28 for an envelope.

Read about how to plant the paper on Botanical Paperworks website.

$4.99 for a package of 10 cards Ten eco-friendly Valentine’s Day cards are packaged with 10 plantable wildflower seed embedded hearts that grow wildflowers when the heart is planted. Every aspect of this plantable card set is eco-friendly, from the 100% post-consumer waste cardstock, to the compostable corn plastic and the wildflower seed embedded hearts that recycle themselves into flowers.

Read more about how to plant the hearts on Botanical Paperworks website.

We all know how the safety of children is paramount, even more so during trick-0r-treating on Halloween. Dr. Tony Woodard, from the Seattle Children’s Hospital has taken the time to put together a little minute and a half video on YouTube to discuss the issues parents need to consider for their children to play it safe this Halloween as they go about the neighborhood trick-or-treating for their Halloween goodies.  Most of the tips are common sense, but it never hurts to refresh ourselves with helpful tips now and again. After all, we all know how easy it is to overlook little things, especially when we are busy.

50 Cheap & Easy Halloween Costumes for Adults & Children

Posted on: October 23, 2009 @ 8:00 am     2 Comments »

We received a recent email with this information:

Christmas is just around the corner, and Halloween is feeling the pinch;  at least according to a recent survey done by the National Retail Federation. NRF is saying the typical American shopper will spend about $10 less this Halloween compared to last year. The same survey indicates that more than 16 percent of the respondents will trim costs by making costumes rather than purchasing them. Just because the economy is sluggish and disposable income is down doesn’t mean those participating in Halloween can’t celebrate what has become one of the most popular holidays for adults and children alike. Ask Coupon Sherpa has posted an article 50 Cheap & Easy Halloween Costumes for Adults & Children.

Here is a sampling of their costume ideas:

flo-costume

  • Progressive Insurance’s Flo: All you need is a white shirt, white apron, name tag and a headband and you’re set to cut insurance deals for fellow party goers.
  • Job Seeker: Whether you’re unemployed or gainfully employed, this costume is a cinch. Dress in your favorite suit, grab a suitcase and resume and you’re set to go. Those truly unemployed might want to stock the briefcase with real resumes, just in case that perfect job prospect shows up at the party.
  • Backwards Man: This simple concept was popular in the 1980s  and is due for a revival. Simply put your clothes on backwards, pad your front to give yourself some “back” and voila, you’re ready.
  • Pile of Laundry: The perfect costume for college students! Simply pin clothes onto an old outfit or, for a more complex costume, cut the bottom out of an old laundry basket, fill it with clothes and wear it around your waist. A hat made from a washed-out Clorox bottle adds a jaunty touch. Don’t forget to toss in a few used fabric-softener sheets.
  • Work of Art: This couldn’t be easier: Hang a large picture frame around your neck. If you want to make it complicated, consider dressing up as a specific work of art, such as the Mona Lisa or a Van Gogh self-portrait.
  • Web site: Glasses wearers can turn themselves into a Web site by draping fake spider webs all over those eyepieces.

The article even includes a recipe for fake blood and instructions to create fake wounds. That isn’t for the faint in heart though! To find out what the other 44 ideas are visit Ask Coupon Sherpa here.

Healthy Halloween Treats from Disney FamilyFun

Posted on: October 20, 2009 @ 8:00 am     No Comments »

Kids on candy overload? Here are six fun – yet healthy – recipes for parties or after-school snacks from Disney FamilyFun magazine. Used with Permission.

Black Bean Cat Crudite´s
No bones about it, this kitty skeleton makes a healthy centerpiece for Halloween parties or school gatherings. Just arrange assorted fresh vegetables and a bowl of your favorite black bean dip in the shape of a spooky cat.

Edible Eyeballs

Set out a platter of these creepy peepers, and your party guests are bound to do a double take. Simply slice carrots into 1-inch-thick chunks, top each with a blob of cream cheese and one half of a pitted black olive, and they’re ready to serve.

0806_recipe_edibleeyeballs

Salty Bones

It wouldn’t be Halloween without a skeleton—in this case, one that’s been disassembled into a pile of tasty bones to pick. Unroll a tube of refrigerated breadsticks we used an 11-ounce tube to make 12 bones) and separate the rectangular pieces. Working with one piece at a time, stretch the dough to lengthen it a bit and then use kitchen scissors or a knife to cut a 1K-inch slit in the center of each end. Shape the resulting four flaps of dough into knobs that look like the ends of a bone. Place the dough bones on an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them a few inches apart, and sprinkle on a little coarse salt. Bake the bones at 375° until they are light golden brown, about 12 minutes.

Pizza Mummies

These yummy mummy pizzas make a quick and fun Halloween lunch or dinner. To create one, first spread a tablespoon of pizza sauce onto half of an English muffin (toast it first, if you like). Set olive slices in place for eyes and add round slices of green onion or bits of red or green pepper for pupils. Lay strips of cheese (we used a pulled-apart cheese stick) across the muffin for the mummy’s wrappings. Bake at 350° until the cheese is melted and the muffin is toasty, about 10 minutes.

Pumpkin Roll-Ups

Here’s a wholesome snack to serve before the kids head out to trick-or-treat. Lay American cheese slices or spread cream cheese on sun-dried-tomato tortillas, then roll them up and cut them into 1-inch sections. Use a toothpick to secure each roll-up, topped with a sprig of cilantro or parsley.

Melon Brain

Created from nothing more than a small, round seedless watermelon, this spooky cerebral creation is bound to turn heads. First, use a vegetable peeler to remove the entire green rind, exposing the inner white rind. Then slice off the bottom of the melon to make a flat base that will keep it from rolling. With a toothpick, outline squiggly furrows that resemble the folded surface of a brain. Finally, carve narrow channels along the tracings with a sharp paring knife (a parent’s job) to expose the pink fruit beneath the rind.

Five Ways to Make Family Travel More Affordable This Fall
By Barbara Messing, VP Travel-Ticker.com

Being a mom who works in the travel industry, I’m always getting questions from other parents about how they can plan a getaway with the kids that won’t break the bank. These questions range from “Where should I go to get the best value?” to “How can we save money on holiday travel?” to “What is a great family-friendly destination?”… just to name a few. And while the state of the economy has many families feeling stretched, there is a silver lining when it comes to travel. The travel deals out there are better than I’ve seen in years, making this fall a great time to take a family vacation.

I am seeing two interesting trends in the industry these days. First, people are booking their vacations closer to the actual travel dates, as they want to have the best picture possible of their life before they make the decision to book their travel arrangements. Second, I see the “power of the purse” in action, with more women making the majority of travel decisions and taking responsibility for booking family getaways. I call it the “anti-Clark Griswald effect.”

So how do you get the most for your money when booking travel for your family? Here are five ideas to make family travel affordable this fall:

1. Picking the right destination: Deals are abundant, but especially at family destinations this year, so now you just need to decide where to go. Occupancy levels at popular family resorts were already low, and with families back to school the hotels have even more empty rooms. If you can steal a break with the kids this Fall, San Diego , Orlando , Hawaii and Los Angeles all offer amazing value this season and plenty of entertainment for your family.
2. Finding flights: Prices are great right now as airlines are trying to fill seats with earlier and more aggressive fares than normal fall sales. Airline prices change constantly, so look for these low fares now and when you see a great fare, book it immediately. A handful of airlines still offer child discounts, but as a general rule, you will find a better deal if you look out for the lowest fares you can find online and special sales. These are inevitably lower than the full-priced child fares. You can sign up for sale and fare alerts with your favorite airlines and travel sites.
3. Consider All-inclusive resorts: All-inclusive resort vacations are a family’s best friend and are offering some of the best discounts I’ve seen in years. Perfect for a cross-generational family beach vacation – everyone can eat, stay and play at an all-inclusive with one set price. Plus, most resorts offer a “kids camp” so that the parents can enjoy some downtime with a fruity drink and a book by the pool—a rarity on most vacations.
4. Timing is everything: If you want to save even more money and score some incredible deals on flights or beach vacations, try between now and December 19th, when the demand and prices are low. The next few months before the holidays are a great time to visit Florida , Mexico and the Caribbean for some of the lowest rates of the year. Vacation packagers will often offer rates at 4-star All-inclusive resorts that include airfare for around $100 per day during these low-season times. Often children under 12 are able to stay and eat for free at these resorts, so check around for the best pricing.
5. Booking holiday travel: If you haven’t booked your holiday travel yet, I would suggest doing that now. October is a very good time to book travel because you will still see some good options on pricing and routes. I have a couple of recommendations to keep both your costs and stress in check. If possible, try to fly nonstop out of a popular airline hub. You will find more competition among airlines and thus better pricing. More importantly, by flying nonstop you will not get stuck at one of your connections with your tired and cranky family, nor will your luggage with all of the Christmas presents end up at the wrong airport. If you do have to make a connection, try flying on the off-peak days of the holiday and when picking your routing, avoid hubs that get frequent weather delays. Finally, treat yourself well. If you don’t want to sleep on grandma’s air mattress, check out the amazing hotel rates during holiday weekends. Business travelers who head home for the holidays leave empty hotels, which translates to great discounts to gain your business. Or even better, leave the kids on the air mattress and enjoy a hotel getaway for yourselves.

Healthy Halloween Tips from Pirate’s Booty

Posted on: October 09, 2009 @ 8:00 am     No Comments »

masthead-logo

It’s that time of year again when yards are filled with scary creatures, mothers are scurrying to make or buy the best Halloween costume and children are filled with glee at the prospect of going trick or treating. Meanwhile, parents scratch their heads and wonder if it is truly worth all the effort and the dental visits. Pirate’s Booty http://www.piratesbooty.com shared some timely tips in a recent email that we thought would be fun to pass along. Here they are:

• Fill it up. Feed children a full, nutritious meal before heading out to trick-or-treat. This can prevent them from devouring candy while out on the trail.
• Barter a trade. Offer coins or a coveted toy in replace of the candy.
• Do your research. Some dentist offices have actually started implementing candy buyback programs the day after Halloween. Kids receive a monetary reward, while the candy gets shipped to different organizations like US troops abroad.
• Treat others. Donate sweets to a local food bank.
• Portion control. Ration the candy and pack in zip lock bags. Two to three small treats after a meal will fill that sweet tooth.
• Help another parent out. Hand out non-candy treats such as a low-fat snack pack.

Pirate’s Booty offers some tasty snack alternatives to the usual sugar laden fair that is passed out each Halloween. Pirate’s Booty says that their products are the perfect fit for the “Help another parent out” tip above. Pirate’s Booty comes in a variety of flavors, including: Aged White Cheddar, Barbeque, Veggie and Sea Salt & Vinegar and look out for a brand new, kid-friendly flavor – Pirate’s Booty New York Pizza! Follow this link and click on the individual bags snacks for more information about that flavor.

Pirate’s Booty also shared these facts:

Pirate’s Booty is trans-fat, gluten and tree nut free. Plus, Pirate’s Booty only has up to 130 calories per serving.

Other great-tasting snacks include Smart Puffs, all-natural baked corn puffs made with real Wisconsin cheddar and Original Tings, all-natural vegan crunchy corn sticks. Kids love the flavors and parents won’t have to be haunted by the idea of feeding their kids sugary snacks. These Halloween treasures are fun and the product characters may even inspire future costume ideas!

Pirate’s Booty hopes you’ll be inspired to live a little healthier! And so do we! So as Pirate’s Booty master pirate says, “Let’s weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen! “

Summertime Safety

Posted on: June 19, 2009 @ 12:00 pm     No Comments »

skateboarding3Summer is here, and the Kessler Foundation (one of the largest nonprofits serving people with physical disabilities) and its chapter of ThinkFirst (a national injury prevention program that teaches children how to decrease their risk of experiencing a disabling injury) would like to take this opportunity to provide parents with some important tips to help keep children safe during these busy and active months. Nearly half of all childhood injury-related deaths take place in the summer months–and many of those can be prevented without compromising a moment of anyone’s fun in the sun!

1. Check all outdoor toys that have been stored during the winter to insure no wheels are loose, no pieces are missing, and there is no other wear that would make the toy unsafe for children. For new toys, check the packaging for warning labels and consider checking online to be sure that the toy is considered safe by child safety advocates.

2. Insist that your children wear a helmet every time they ride their bike, skateboard or rollerblade. Studies have shown wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of a head injuries by as much as 85 percent. When purchasing a helmet, insure that it fits properly and meets or exceeds the safety standards developed by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and/or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

3. At the pool, experts recommend that young children do not dive at all, while older children should only do so in at least eight feet of water with arms extended out in front. Also teach all children to look before they leap into the water–it’s the only way to be sure that they won’t land in a crowded area of the water and potentially injure both themselves and others.

4. Always require children to wear a seatbelt while riding in a car and check to be sure that the belt is snug across their hips. If your car becomes really hot, take care to avoid “buckle burns”–this can be a particular problem for young children who are still in car seats. And, of course, NEVER leave a child unattended in a car!

The Flower Girl’s Important Role

Posted on: May 13, 2009 @ 4:13 pm     1 Comment »

flower_girl_dressesChildren often play an important role in a wedding and one of the most well know roles is the flower girl. The flower girl’s job is to follow the bridal party up the aisle tossing flowers onto the ground.

Preparing for this special day is a lot of work for the bride. The bride must consider the flower girl when choosing a dress for the bridal party because the flower girl’s dress is usually similar in style.

The wedding guests at the celebration often enjoy this part of the wedding because children can be unpredictable. Some may run up the aisle while others may move slowly without tossing the flowers.

With many flower girl dresses available, choosing the best gown can be a difficult decision for the bride. The best way to find a beautiful dress is to choose something similar to the dress worn by the bridesmaids.
