4 Unique Ways to Mentally Ready Yourself and Your Family to Move

Getting ready for a move could be an overwhelming experience. There are a lot of small details and big tasks that need to be done. These four tips will help you to mentally ready yourself and your family for a relocation.

Make a Timeline and To-Do List

As soon as you know that you need to move, make a timeline and a to-do list. Your list should be detailed and include essentials such as contacting a real estate agent and setting up utility services. Be sure to add some wiggle room in your to-do list and timeline in case of delays caused by weather, medical issues or other concerns.

Use Professional Moving Services

Professional moving services will shorten your to-do list. If the idea of doing all of the moving-related tasks yourself overwhelms you, turn to full-service movers. Certain companies, like M Dyer & Sons Inc., know that professional movers will get the supplies, pack your belongings, and deliver them. They will also map out the route and can unpack your belongings. If you want movers to reassemble your furniture and set up your home theater, be sure to arrange those services.

Look for Fun Things to Do

Look for fun things to do in the city you are moving to. Ask each member of your household what they want to do in the new town. Kids might want to find the best ice cream shop or movie theater, while the grown-ups might want to scope out the gyms or shopping centers. Look for fun things to do on your travel route if you will be driving to your new city.

Take Time to Say Goodbye

Getting closure in your current city will help everyone to prepare for the move. Take the time to say goodbye to the mail delivery person, your doctor and dentist and other people you interact with. Allow kids to say goodbye to their favorite park or playground. Give kids the time to say goodbye to their friends and teachers. Have a moving party at your house and take lots of photos of your neighbors and acquaintances to remember them by.

Moving is a big life change for everyone in your family. Be prepared for some feelings of sadness, but take the time to remember the happy memories you had in your home and neighborhood. Think about all of the new opportunities that may be ahead of you at your new place. Take your time with planning, and allow your children to talk through their complicated feelings.
