Missing Teeth? 4 Options To Consider For A Full Smile

Most children will develop 20 teeth as they grow up, losing these “deciduous” teeth along the way. As they grow and age, baby teeth eventually fall out and are replaced by adult teeth. Grownups generally have 32 teeth. But sometimes things happen unexpectedly that can cause us to lose teeth due to accidents, illness, medications, or other reasons. When an adult tooth is lost, there are replacement options. Here are some of the most common ways to get a full smile.

Crowns

When a partial tooth is lost or decayed, a dentist can smooth off the top and insert a crown to make the tooth appear complete. This helps aesthetically for appearance and functionally for chewing to replace the missing tooth.

Bridges

A bridge may be able to replace a wholly or partly missing tooth in certain cases. The dentist can create a bridge structure, which is like a crown supported by connecting structures to the regular teeth on either side. This approach not only replaces the missing tooth, but also stabilizes surrounding teeth for a firm bite and perfect smile.

Dentures

For patients who have lost several teeth, a denture device or partial denture could be the answer. Dentures look like real human teeth, although they are made of artificial materials. A partial denture can comprise several teeth in one section of the mouth to replace missing teeth. A complete denture may replace a full set of upper or lower teeth. These appliances are removable for cleaning or comfort, as needed. They work just like regular teeth.

Implants

Dental implants are probably the most complex option for restoring a person’s teeth using cosmetic materials. In the gap established by a missing tooth, the dentist may decide to implant gum tissue to build up the foundation for a dental implant. After several months a small hole can be drilled into the gum tissue, reaching the bone where it the metal stud is anchored. A temporary tooth is sometimes placed on the stud until it fully heals. Then a regular replacement tooth is sealed onto the stud, looking and acting like a normal tooth, and brushed or cleaned the same way. Expert dentistry is required for this procedure. You can contact professionals, like Kyle J Frisinger DMD, for detailed information on how implants and other dental replacement options work.
