Sandra Boynton has written numerous children’s books. Most of them are the baby board books, which I love. They are sturdy and hold up well under eager little hands. There are three of Ms. Boynton’s books in particular that stand out in my mind because they seem to be read over and over again at our house.
One of them is Pajama Time!. Pajama Time! has Ms. Boynton’s cute little animal characters and the silly but thoroughly entertaining story about going to bed and pajamas. In that all too familiar rhyming style that Boynton has etched out as her own, she draws you in. Pajama Time! could very well be a “jammin’ session” if you are good at making acapella sounds. Here is a fun excerpt:
“Pajammy to the left.
Pajammy to the right.
(Jamma jamma jamma jamma P! J!)
Everybody’s wearing them for dancing tonight.
(Jamma jamma jamma jamma P! J!)”
Children and adults alike love a book that grabs and keeps their attention. It is such a pleasure to read and see the delight that a good book brings to a child. Boynton’s books do this. Parents shouldn’t feel annoyed or bothered by the demands of a child to read a book over and over again, for it is then that the child is actually memorizing it. Before long you will see the child taking the book themselves and reciting it, which is the start of their independent reading. When books cause your child to break out into a smile and eager to sit and read, then you may rest assured that you are cultivating a love for books and reading. Reading is one of the best activities to do with children of all ages.
