How Scary is Having a Baby When You’re Over 40?

July 23rd, 2010 by Theresa Gould

As a mom who will be forty when my eighth child will be born in August, I am really not all that concerned about bearing children in my forties. Yes, I will admit that this pregnancy has been harder than others, but so many things factor into that – my previous losses, my concern during the first half of my pregnancy not knowing if this baby would make it to term. Not to mention wondering if I was going to make it with all the discomforts that I have experienced in this pregnancy – prolonged nausea and tiredness, low iron, achy hips due to an aggravated sciatic nerve. I use to have easy pregnancies, now I can honestly sympathize with those who are not so blessed.

There has been much debate over women having a baby 40 and beyond. However, it seems like more and more women are waiting until they are older to have children, even with the knowledge of the higher risks. Plus, there are women like me who are choosing to continue to bear children past the normal 1-2 children and on into our 40′s.

What Are the Risks?

If you do an internet search you will find that there are high risks of birth defects for the baby and pregnancy-related diseases for the mother that are enough to make any woman scared out of her wits to even attempt to conceive, let alone give birth to a baby past the age of 40.

The birth rate for women age 40-44 increased 4 percent in 2008 from 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Contrast that to the birth rate for women below age 40, which went down as much as 3 percent from 2007 to 2008.(1)

March of Dimes
lists these risk factors for women over age 35:

Higher chances of miscarriage (Editor’s note: I had 5 miscarriages between the age of 27 and 38, so shouldn’t I be more frightened as I enter my 40′s?):
About 20 percent at ages 35 to 39
About 35 percent at ages 40 to 44
More than 50 percent by age 45

March of Dimes also sites the following complications as being higher with age: gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, placental problems, premature birth, stillbirth and higher chances of c-section. (2) I think the national average is already too high.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
reports that “The cesarean rate rose by 53% from 1996 to 2007, reaching 32%, the highest rate ever reported in the United States.”

Doesn’t sound too promising for us, does it?

So How Scary is Having a Baby When You’re Over 40?

Each of us will have to make that decision for ourselves. Personally, I know that there isn’t much I can do to control what my body does with each pregnancy. I cannot control a miscarriage once it starts. However, I can take action to live a healthier lifestyle, so should I be blessed with more pregnancies during my 40′s I will know I have done all I could to try and improve my pregnancy outcomes. The thing is none of us can usually prevent a miscarriage or a stillbirth or even a premature birth, unless we have knowingly engaged in activities that could trigger these events – which is pretty rare. Rare also is the doctor or midwife who points a finger at a mom experiencing a loss saying, “You did this or You didn’t do this.” There are some things that are just out of our control.

I am not afraid to have a baby in my 40′s. I think babies are a blessing whatever age I am when they are conceived. I will admit to being afraid to lose them during pregnancy, but do not want any negative comments about that fact. That is my personal struggle, one that I will continue to battle as long as my husband and I choose to have children.

What I would like to hear are stories of women who have had pregnancies in their 40′s or why some of you may have already decided not to have children over 35 or 40. I know we have a lot of young readers, but I also know that we have some who are older too and we all can learn from each other.

So are you afraid to have a child in your late 30′s and 40′s?

Preemie Babies

I thought I would try and glean knowledge from our Fashionable Bambino readers this morning. We just learned that friends of ours delivered their first baby via c-section on Monday. His name is baby Huck and he weighed only 1 lb. 8 oz. at 26 weeks gestation. This is the first time we’ve had friends deliver a premature baby, so I wanted to gather ideas from others who have been through the ups and downs of having a preemie baby.

Here are some things I have thought of to help them:

- Mama gets out of the hospital today, so we’d like to deliver a meal care package.
- They have an organic farm, so we hope to help them at the Farmers Market or in the fields a few times.
- I have already emailed them a note when I heard that Mama went into premature labor a couple of weeks ago and I plan to call them today.

But what else can we do? Is there anything? Besides offering up our own prayers that Baby Huck will grow and develop with the best medical help outside of his mama’s womb?

What would you do if it were your friends? Or what kind of help do you think you’d want if you ever found yourself in this situation?

What’s In? Black and White Floral Maternity Dresses

June 29th, 2010 by Theresa Gould

When I did my posts about maternity and nursing dresses, never did I think I would come across an article featuring celebrities wearing some of the styles that I saw, but did not mention in my write-ups! So in an effort to rectify my faux pas I thought I would share the article, plus a few of the black and white floral maternity dresses – especially one that a celebrity mom wore while she was expecting, as she’s since had her baby.

Last week, CelebrityBabyScoop.com featured a little piece about Jennifer Gareis and her classy dress:

Jennifer Gareis walked the carpet at Heidi Klum’s Moms-To-Be night held at A Pea in the Pod in Beverly Hills, Calif. in their strapless sash belt maternity dress. These black and white floral dresses our bold yet feminine.

Here is the dress Jennifer wore:

Then here are a couple others that I found that are different than the ones that Celebrity Baby Scoop shared:

Everly Grey’s Black and White Sleeveless Maternity Dress

At Target I found two styles of the same dress by Liz Lange for $24.99 each. They are black and white with a bit of red too:

Liz Lange® for Target® Maternity Floral Print Puff Sleeve Dress

Liz Lange® for Target® Maternity Floral Print Twist V-Neck Dress

So there you have it a taste of style and fashion of what’s in with at least one celebrity for maternity wear.

Kegels – Good or Bad?

June 28th, 2010 by Theresa Gould

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have heard conflicting information about doing Kegel exercises during pregnancy and especially after giving birth to strengthen pelvic muscles and to prevent incontinence. Then last week a friend forwarded me a link that was a very interesting and educational interview between Kara, freelance writer and blogger at Mama Sweat and Katy Bowman, who gave her perspective, from her biomechanical scientist viewpoint, of Kegels and pelvic exercises.

The basis of the article was to do exercises that strengthened the whole pelvic area, not just one particular muscle because all of the muscles “down there” are a whole system and need to be treated as such to get the maximum result of strong pelvic muscles.

My research also brought out the fact that Dr. Kegel had good intentions when he created his Kegel exercises, over time though recommendations have changed. It isn’t that Kegels are innately bad, but neither is doing 200/day a good thing for our bodies.

I read and scanned many different articles and was very intrigued and enlighted, so I hope you will be too.

I found these two in the comment section of Mama Sweat:

Katy Bowman – We need to investigate this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18651881 a bit more it would appear. Also, short-term kegel studies conclude with the fact that more research is needed before deciding if they are, in fact effective.

The Shape of a Mother

June 22nd, 2010 by Theresa Gould

Our culture is obsessed with the way we look. As I have stated before, we are bombarded with airbrushed images left, right and in between. There is simply no escaping it. It is going to take much more than Dove’s beauty campaign or Vogue’s use of heavier models to change our mindsets. This problem is much deeper than that. It is the problem of women, like you and me, not accepting ourselves and the way our bodies were made. I really appreciated a website that Sarah passed on to me called The Shape of a Mother.

Image: healingdream / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

I have only read one post, along with the home page so far and I am intrigued. I love what she states on her home page because it hits this subject right on – Our ever-changing bodies, as mothers who have nourished our children inside our wombs, as well as outside, are undervalued for all the good work they have done over the years to bring the next generation into the world.

How many of you struggle with the way you look, the way you feel about the way you look or hate the shape of your body? Why should you feel like that? You shouldn’t! You have done a great job of bringing your children into the world. Pregnancy, birth, feeding and caring for infants, babies, toddlers and children is not for the faint hearted, is it? I’ll answer that – No it isn’t. I find that pregnancy, birth and caring for children strengthens me as a person. No matter how exhausting motherhood is, it is the best thing we will ever do in this lifetime.

The Shape of a Mother is more than our bodies and how we look. Motherhood itself helps shape us into the women we are meant to be. Just as we have a hand in shaping our children into the people they are to become.

If you are struggling with your body image or the way pregnancy and motherhood has changed your body, please visit TheShapeofa Mother.com I think you will find much commaradie among the readers and stories you will find there. Beware that the site does contain nudity, as the owner of the site has allowed women to share their photos and “expose” America’s greatest kept secret – The “real” Shape of a Mother.
